Shirley Darlene LaCourse

Shirley “Darlene” LaCourse, 65, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, in Terrell, Texas. Born on February 14, 1958, in Farmington, New Mexico, to Shirley Slay and Taylor Smith, Darlene’s life was a tapestry of vibrant experiences and profound love. Her early years were marked by travels across the United States, from California to Florida, echoing the footsteps of her stepfather’s naval career. Ultimately, she found her heart’s home in Dallas, Texas.Darlene’s professional journey was as varied as it was rich, spanning roles from bartending to title clerking at auto dealerships. Yet, these roles were mere backdrops to her true vocation: motherhood. For Darlene, being a mother wasn’t just a role; it was her essence, her greatest joy. In 2019, she embraced retirement, which allowed her to fully dedicate herself to being “Nana,” a title she cherished since the birth of her first grandchild in 2000.Her life, though marked by the passing of her father Taylor Smith, mother Shirley Slay, brothers James Smith, Michael Slay, Taylor Smith, and her son Montana Simpson, was also illuminated by the love of her surviving family. Her husband, Bob LaCourse; sons, David Olsen (wife Erica), Kevin Simpson (wife Brittany), Tony Echard, Brian Lacourse; daughters, Laura Lacourse, and Maya Crowsey; brothers, Donald Slay (wife Lynda), Brad Smith (wife Luella); and sisters, Sandra Smith (husband Gary) and Marie Vendetti Fox (husband Bill) remain testaments to her enduring love.Nana’s legacy continues through her ten grandchildren: Logan, Kylie, Grace, Kelsey, Kaylin, Makeala, Jayden, Gavin, Brendon, and Brock. Her love for them was boundless, a beacon of warmth and strength.Known for her tenacity, Darlene was a fighter, a trait she honed as a Salvation Army Golden Gloves boxer. She battled through life’s challenges with the same ferocity, ensuring her family never lacked for love or support. Her determination never wavered, even in times of hardship, as she single-handedly raised her children, often working multiple jobs without ever seeking outside assistance.Five years ago, Darlene married “Papa Bob” LaCourse, who showered her with the love and care she had always given to others. Their years together were filled with joy, travel, and mutual adoration. As we prepare to bid farewell to Darlene, we invite friends and family to join in celebrating her remarkable life:Service DetailsDate: Tuesday, December 5th
