James Michael Hagy
(James) Michael Hagy, age 55, of Justin, Texas passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023 after a long harrowing battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mike was born on May 8th, 1968 to Lois (Pugh) and James Hagy in Birmingham, Alabama. He had two older sisters, Glenda Barber and Pam Perry. Mike attended Corner High School with his best friend Billy Hinkle, where they spent many an hour cruising the winding Alabama back roads to the determinant of their vehicles and their own safety. Mike graduated in 1986, and soon went on to marry Renee Moses. The marriage produced one son, Christopher Moses. After a few years Renee and Mike divorced. In the years that followed Mike worked in manufacturing and retail.
It wasn’t until 1998, that Mike met the girl who was to be the true love of his life, in a little hotel dive bar in Birmingham, Alabama. It was less than a year after meeting Angie Klein that the two were engaged, and less than a year after that, in November of 1999 they were married. In 2001 they welcomed there first son Matthew, and in 2008 they had second son Nathan. Angie had been in Birmingham from Wisconsin attending graduate school, so in 2003, Mike and the family moved to Wisconsin to be closer to Angie’s family. Mike was truly excited to shovel snow that first winter, but that excitement waned as the years went by. It didn’t matter that they were in Wisconsin, Mike remained true to his Alabama roots, and was a dire hard Crimson Tide football fan. His family has many fond memories of him cheering them on, and no matter how well they were doing he could not sit down and relax until the game was won. Though in the end he did potentially owe saving his life to the Green Bay Packers, which granted them a level of respect. The family had arrived a bit late to the football stadium in Green Bay, and if it wasn’t for the brisk walk up the incline ramp, Mike may have never known that arteries in his heart had once again become blocked. The walk acted as a stress test leading to the detection of the blockage and a quintuple bypass followed. As with all of the medical hurdles that came his way Mike took the situation on with optimism and determination, never letting it get him down. This was even true when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018. However, as Mike’s health began to fail, he craved the warm sunshine and hospitality of the
south, so in 2020 the family packed up and again moved across the country this time settling in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mike never met a stranger; he talked to everyone. He loved chatting with neighbors and never passed up the opportunity to strike up a conversation. Even more than socializing, Mike loved his family and there was no limit to what he would do for them. No matter how sick he felt he was there for his boys, getting Matthew moved in at college or taking Nathan to and from school daily. He arrived hours early to pick Matthew up from football practice and made it to all of his football games. He even volunteered to man the grill for the concession stand. Mike took Nathan out for ice cream every Friday to celebrate having made it through another week of school. He fought for his family, and he fought his illness for them.
Mike’s final wishes were to be cremated and to be part of the places and people he loved. Even in death he put his family first, wanting Angie and the boys to travel to those places he most cherished and to celebrate Mike’s life in order to create new positive memories rather than having a memorial service.
